Planet Earth is now home to 7B – 7.000.000.000 – individuals.
The media spends too much time scaring people about it, while some entrepreneurs are already thinking of how they can profit from this growth and getting ready to support 7T – 7.000.000.000.000 – and not 7B (I can only wonder what a person would think of 7B when the 7M mark was passed…).
Well, those entrepreneurs are considering… Vertical Farming.
Vertical farming is a way to produce food inside mega-cities like highly-populated Tokyo, highly-poluted Mexico City or cold Moscow, making those cities food independent, at least for some categories of products, while occupying only a small fraction of the city ground.
This will answer the problem of population growth till space is cheaply available, the urbanization challenge, and avoid food wars in the next century. It will have also collateral benefits, like no weather-related crop failures, reduction of herbicides and pesticides used, water-reutilization, fossil fuel use reduction, fresher food to cities, farming in previously inhospitable places, and of course better employment than traditional farming with better wages and work conditions. This is how cities will look like in not a very far future.
